Game Stories

Game Stories

I was reading through some of peoples stories of how they came across their game and made it work by taking a huge risk and going for it no matter the outcome.

I was reading about an RPG game called Rollers of the Realm. It was founded by a company called Phantom Compass and it was founded in 2008 that was made to develop games for kids Tv producers. They were very product but they lacked in funds for low budget flash games. Later on in late 2011 they laid off literally dozens of staff members, more than half of the members that were laid off were over qualified in experience. The phantom compass founder Tony Walsh and production head Ericka Evans saw an opportunity in this and brought some of the best vets into a meeting with the indie team. A triple side A came to them with high production values and experience with shipping large titles. They took a big risk combining 2 distinct teams and choosing a unlikely mash up of pinball and role-playing games. They ended up with 3 years, 2 funding rounds and nearly 50 extended team members later exceeding everyone's expectations.

See what happened was they had an original idea for the game Rollers of Realm when both Phantom compass and laid off triple A friends came together. They came up with a simple idea that was easy to get behind and enough scope to produce 3-6 months. Their friend Tom Beirnes brought up Pinball Quest as something that had not be done before at the time in the early 90's.
This was a 2D protype
The concept opened alot of doors and gave them some ideas to start working off of. They managed to put together a 2D prototype of the game in time for GDC 2012 and got ready to show their game to the world. When they showed it off everybody liked to so much so infact that they were given a fund which they immediately used to turn their 2D game idea into the first major 3D game. One the public started to find about and enjoy their idea they decided to start making characters to help keep the story narrative simple and place focus on the old misfit playable characters.
They made a 3D major Game
The next step on the development of the game was finding out if it was fun and if people where going to enjoy at as much as they hoped that they would so they did what anybody else would do when the game was close to completion and they hire around 100 testers  all different age ranges to play the game and give feedback and the game
Full version with people playing the game for testing
When all of that was done they had to look and think what platform that they would like to have their own game like xbox or pc ect.
The moral of the story is at first they had a lot of problem and they were struggling and they were down on there luck but after taking risks and doing things that nobody else would think about and they got there in the end because of  dedication and a hard working team.
